Spring Open Day 2010! Saturday 24th April.12 noon to 4pm

Come and see the labyrinth, the planting and the spring leaves. See the picture above. It has all changed and you will not believe it. Thanks to a donation of turf from ECO, a Dorset based company, in that big circle is a turf labyrinth, and thanks to Stone Firms on Portland there are stone benches to sit upon. Come and plant something beautiful and join us in celebrating spring and the dedication of a Peace Pole (part of a global network.Look up the World Peace Prayer society on the internet).

Spring at last!

After a long, very cold winter, I walked into the garden this week and the colour took my breath away.
Last September we had a bulb planting day. It rained solidly all day and we were amazed that so many people turned up, including the children with their buckets and spades and a large bag of tulip. It was a muddy, slippery wet day and we wondered if any bulbs would survive.

This week, a couple of days of sunshine, have warmed the earth and the new borders are covered in intense purples and yellows of the crocuses. Here and there the late snowdops add a touch of white. The tete a tete daffodils are a real zingy yellow.
Under the trees there are a few wind flowers (anenomes) unfurling. So if you came a planted bulbs, come and see them now!

We are still trying to get the garden part ready for our first Open Day Saturday 24th April. 12 noon until 4pm. All welcome to come.
At 1:30pm there will be some tree planting and at 2pm we will dedicate the Peace Pole. This is an international movement. There are Peace Poles all over the world! Ours will now become one of them. I understand there are people who visit them 'peace pole' bagging and ticking them off as they go.

A milestone: Our first tree planting!

This weekend, Saturday 16th January 2010, the Chair of 'The Friends of the Nothe Gardens' will be planting our first tree. A beautiful Prunus Shirotae (Japanese flowering cherry) that we wanted to see as a focal point from the entrance gateway you can see in the photos.
The 'Friends of the Nothe Gardens' have been our greatest cheerleaders and regular supporters and helpers in this project. So a HUGE thank you to them.

When we are working in the garden there is laughter, chatter and noise (some of us noisier than others..ho hum). We are building, shovelling, scraping and drilling.

But in between the garden goes quiet.

There is a robin that comes back to the elder by the gate, a couple of rooks who mutter to each other in the sycamores and a squirrel that darts up the grey trunk of the big tree in the bottom corner. The seagulls that hang on the wind over the harbour cry out.

Those bulbs we pushed into the mud in the autumn are spearing through the ice crystals. Short, dumpy and waxily green.

Come to work or come to be still. You are welcome!

A New Year and a New Garden Update

Happy New Year to you.

The photos below show some of the progress that has now been made in the garden and some of the volunteers at work just before Christmas. The circular paths are now starting to take shape as you can see.

We have also put a noticeboard up by the entrance to the garden as another way of letting you know what is happening with the project. If you would like to see the overall plan for the garden then you can see a copy of it on the noticeboard.

Also, if you would like to come and help out there will be working parties in the garden from 10-1 on the following Saturdays:

• 9th & 16th January,
• 6th & 20th February,
• 6th and 20th March
• and 3rd & 17th April.

Digging for Peace

We had another working party today to start getting ready for next Saturday's bulb planting.

There were quite a few interested people passing by asking questions about what's happening. I hope that plenty more people will come next week to see the plans for the garden, have a look at the progress made so far and get involved with planting some bulbs.

I will be publishing blog posts in the next two weeks about the history of the site so please add our blog to to your favourites so you can keep up-to-date with the project.

Working Party

Here are some photos taken today of the volunteers hard at work digging out areas of the garden ready for the new paths, flower beds and grass areas.

We are also preparing for our Plant A Bulb for Peace morning on Saturday 24th October when we will be in the garden showing local people the plans getting everyone involved in bulb planting ready for next Spring.
